As the China–Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges unfolds, a new chapter of cultural dialogue is being written in Jinan in Shandong province. The 2026 Shandong Meets Africa Cultural Gala opened on Aug 4, offering visitors a rare side-by-side look at the rich cultural heritage of the two ancient civilizations.

The centerpiece is a themed exhibition focusing on Shandong and Africa's river culture and arts, which will run through Aug 24. The exhibition features four sections, including landscapes, wildlife, craftsmanship, and daily life, juxtaposing African art with Shandong's intangible cultural heritage.

Hodan Abdi, Somalia's ambassador to China, called the gala "a bridge for mutual understanding". She praised Shandong's strengths in manufacturing, marine economy, and digital industries as key attractions for global partners. Abdi also proposed deeper cooperation through youth exchanges, cultural tourism, and media collaboration.

"Africa and China, as cradles of civilization, have shaped the world through their contributions to philosophy, art, and resilience," said Dalva Ringote Allen, Angola's ambassador to China. He emphasized that cultural bonds are just as vital as economic ties, adding mutual respect is the foundation of a lasting partnership.

A bazaar will also run alongside the exhibition for three days with 25 booths, offering Ethiopian coffee, South African wine, and various crafts, alongside Shandong specialties. Visitors can also try on some traditional African attire. The exhibition runs until late August with free admission.
