The first China Laiyang International Mantis Boxing Competition opened on Aug 1 in Laiyang, Yantai, in East China's Shandong province, drawing over 1,800 martial artists from 118 teams worldwide to the birthplace of Mantis Boxing.

The event featured four categories: Mantis Boxing and weapons, traditional barehanded and weapon routines, sparring, and group events, all judged to national standards. Various styles were showcased, including Tai Chi, Seven-Star, and Plum Blossom Mantis Boxing.

The competition impressed participants. "It was really well-organized, providing a great experience," said Huang Jiadong from Quanzhou, Fujian province, who scored over nine points. He also expressed delight at seeing so many enthusiasts from home and abroad.

As China's first international Mantis Boxing tournament, the event attracted global attention. Two enthusiasts from Brazil made their first trip to the birthplace under the guidance of Sun Deyao, a fourth-generation inheritor of Hao's Mantis Boxing. "Competing alongside global masters in the birthplace of Mantis Boxing is a once-in-a-lifetime experience," one participant said.

Beyond the arena, a symposium was held to discuss the preservation, innovation, and global promotion of the martial art. The China Laiyang Mantis Boxing Museum also opened on the same day, showcasing the 300-year heritage. A "Root-Seeking Tour" was organized for guests to explore Laiyang's Cretaceous National Geopark.

This martial arts gathering is taking the centuries-old art from its birthplace to the global stage. The tournament runs through Aug 3.
