Weifang mammoth-themed park opens to public

A new cultural park dedicated to Mammuthus weifangensis, the only mammoth species in the world named after a Chinese city, has opened to visitors in Weifang, Shandong province. Created by the Weifang Museum, the park combines science education, interactive experiences and leisure activities to bring the story of the prehistoric giant to life.

The park serves as an outdoor extension of the Mammuthus weifangensis Fossil Exhibition at the Weifang Museum, extending the exhibition experience from indoor fossil displays to an open-air setting. Visitors can learn about the species and explore its story through a range of interactive experiences.

Mammuthus weifangensis is currently the largest elephant species ever discovered. It lived about 200,000 years ago during the late Middle Pleistocene. In 1979, fossils of the species were accidentally discovered in Wujia village in Weifang. Following excavation and research, the species was officially named Mammuthus weifangensis in 1983.
