Print PrintA national report on building rural civilization was released on July 16 at the 2026 conference on social etiquette and civility in rural areas in Linyi, Shandong province. It reviews major achievements in improving rural cultural life and proposes priorities for further advancing cultural and social development in rural areas.
The report highlights efforts to preserve agricultural and cultural heritage. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has recognized 188 items as China's important agricultural heritage systems, while 25 items have been included on the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems list, the highest number among all countries. A total of 8,155 traditional villages across China have also been placed under national protection.
Rural cultural activities have become increasingly diverse, with programs such as opera performances and reading initiatives bringing cultural services closer to residents. Grassroots events, including village basketball tournaments, village galas, and rural running competitions, have also gained popularity across the country.
Meanwhile, efforts to promote positive social values have continued, with local authorities addressing outdated customs such as excessive bride prices, lavish weddings and funerals. Family-focused initiatives have also expanded, with more than 16.48 million households recognized as "most beautiful families" in China.
The report also highlights improvements in rural vitalization. In 2025, China's annual grain output remained above 700 million metric tons for the second consecutive year, while per capita disposable income for rural residents reached 24,456 yuan ($3,612.79). Education, healthcare, infrastructure, and public services in rural areas have continued to improve.
Looking ahead, China will continue strengthening rural cultural services and agricultural modernization while creating better living conditions and more income opportunities for farmers.
