Print PrintOn March 19, Tai'an co-hosted the "Colorful Tai'an: Opportunities in China" weaving art exchange with its sister city Taean county, South Korea. This event served as a creative bridge, uniting master artisans from both regions to share traditions and strengthen cultural connections.
Zhang Haitao, a fourth-generation inheritor of Zhang's metal weaving — a district-level intangible cultural heritage from Tai'an — joined artists from Taean, South Korea, for an engagement in friendly exchange.
Zhang presented the century-old craft that transforms metal wire into intricate works blending utility with artistry. His pieces often incorporate Taishan Mountain cultural motifs, illustrating the elegance and exactness of the craft.
An artist from Taean presented traditional South Korean rattan weaving, demonstrating techniques handed down through generations. Her creations — baskets, ornaments, and household items — highlighted the natural textures and minimalist aesthetics emblematic of South Korean craftsmanship.
The exchange created a dialogue on heritage preservation and innovation. Zhang shared how Zhang's metal weaving is revitalized through "ICH and cultural creativity" initiatives, while the South Korean artist discussed local efforts to sustain rattan weaving. Through hands-on demonstrations and conversation, both sides explored shared values in materials, technique, and creative inspiration.
The event not only fostered mutual appreciation between these sister cities but also reinforced the role of intangible cultural heritage in building lasting international friendships. Tai'an anticipates more such exchanges, promoting cross-cultural dialogue and preserving the spirit of craftsmanship for future generations.
