At 92, Lyu Mingpu jumped 2.05 meters and became a world champion.

The athlete from Jinan, East China's Shandong, won gold in the men's M90 category (ages 90 and above) Long Jump at the World Masters Athletics Championships (WMAC) Daegu 2026 held in South Korea from Aug 22 to Sept 3. It was his second gold at the event. Earlier, he had won the men's M85+ 4x100-meter relay, competing in a younger age category as permitted under the event's cross-category participation rules.

Lyu also holds the world record for the 100-meter sprint in the men's M90 category.

Born in 1934, Lyu has been a sports enthusiast since childhood. After retiring in 1994, he took up badminton and played regularly for over 30 years. He is also a winter swimmer.

"Everything is possible as long as you live well," Lyu said. His success at the championships, where over 100 Chinese athletes took part, has drawn attention not only for the medals but for what they represent: the possibility of active aging and the pursuit of excellence at any age.
