Qingdao in East China's Shandong province has become the world's third and Asia–Pacific's only Boeing 777 conversion hub. This comes as US-based Mammoth Freighters selected TAIKOO (Shandong) Aircraft Engineering Co Ltd to build China's first Boeing 777 wide-body passenger-to-freighter (P2F) conversion production line at Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport. The first line is scheduled to start operations in September, with a second expected to come online in 2027.

Mammoth Freighters, a specialist in wide-body P2F conversions headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, obtained FAA supplemental type certification for its 777-200LRMF conversion in April. This ranks as the world's first officially certified 777-200LR conversion program. The company plans to operate nine conversion lines globally: five in Fort Worth; two in Manchester, the United Kingdom; and two in Qingdao.

The conversion offers significant advantages over new freighters. A new Boeing 777 freighter carries a list price of over $185 million with a 3-to-5-year delivery lead time. In contrast, a converted freighter costs roughly half as much and can be delivered in as little as six months. 

The first two converted 777-200LRMF freighters are set for commercial service this fall, with launch customers including Qatar Airways and DHL Aviation.

The project fills a technological gap in China's aviation maintenance sector and completes Shandong's full industry value chain – from aircraft maintenance and conversion to cargo operations and support. It is expected to attract supporting enterprises and high-end technical talent to the province.
