This summer, Jining is turning its kitchens into arenas. The 2026 Jining Food League kicked off the city's ultimate culinary carnival, featuring 10 competitive categories – from local street snacks like stuffed pancakes and braised pork to banquet staples such as carp, lobster, and barbecue.

What sets this event apart is its cultural richness. Each dish comes with a story – from the elegance of Shili Gingko to the legend of Confucian Tofu – turning every bite into a taste of the city's 2,500-year-old heritage.

The judging panel reflects the event's inclusive spirit, with scores weighted 50 percent from public judges, 40 percent from professional chefs, and 10 percent from cultural experts. Student judges recruited from across China have brought fresh perspectives, with some even returning from other cities to reconnect with their hometown flavors.

To date, more than 300 catering businesses and 400 chefs from across the city have joined the competition, while the league has already drawn over 500,000 visitors and generated approximately 50 million yuan ($7.41 million) in consumer spending.

The league was launched on June 28 and will run through mid-August. By blending food with heritage and community participation, Jining is serving up a recipe for cultural revival and economic vitality.
