Dezhou Museum in East China's Shandong province has launched the province's first permanent intangible cultural heritage (ICH) puppet show program inside a museum, combining traditional puppetry with artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

The museum's new dedicated performance space features AI-powered puppets performing classic tales including Wu Song Fights the Tiger. Using motion capture, automated control systems, and 3D-printed puppet heads embedded with smart chips, the technology enables precise, lifelike movements and seamless scene transitions.

The program has been a hit since its launch. "Within just days, every show was packed, receiving strong recognition from tourists and families," said Yu Fei, general manager of a Dezhou-based culture and tourism technology company.

Beyond the puppet theater, the museum offers a fully immersive experience, including a virtual reality theater, a special insect exhibition, ICH craft workshops, and a summer reading camp. This integrated approach combines cultural relics viewing, puppet performances, tech interactions, and hands-on activities.

"This summer, we've moved beyond static displays to blend ICH, digital technology, and nature-based aesthetics," said Qu Yalou, deputy director of Dezhou Museum. 

"We want culture to be seen, touched, and experienced in an immersive way." 

The museum has quickly become a popular summer destination for families and study groups in Dezhou.
