The Tongji River renewal project in Xianhe town, located within the Dongying Port Economic Development Zone, has been selected as one of 30 cases in the first IOPUR Global Best Practices for Urban Renewal, released during the 13th World Urban Forum in Azerbaijan.

Co-launched by UN-Habitat and Shanghai University, the selection recognizes urban renewal practices with strong planning value and practical impact. For Xianhe town, the honor also reflects a long-standing commitment to thoughtful urban development.

The story began in the 1980s, when Xianhe town invited Tongji University to prepare its town plan, laying a solid foundation for a livable waterfront town. In 2024, the development zone once again worked with Tongji University to carry out a new round of urban renewal efforts.

As a key part of this effort, the Tongji River project improved flood control, drainage, water quality and ecological habitats, while creating an inviting waterfront space for residents.

With six themed landscape sections unfolding along its banks, the renewed Tongji River now blends nature, culture and daily life. It has become more than just an ecological corridor, transforming into a shared public space, a symbol of urban vitality, and a fresh example of high-quality renewal from Dongying.
