Urban residents in Shandong no longer need to travel to distant wetlands to see rare wildlife. The great crested grebe, a graceful waterbird known for its striking appearance, has recently been spotted in urban lakes across the province.
With chestnut and black head plumes forming a distinctive crown, the nearly 50-cm-long adult bird presents an elegant figure on the water. An expert diver, it depends on clean, vegetation-rich waters to hunt fish and shrimp, making its presence a good sign of a healthy aquatic ecosystem.
From Jinan's Daming and Huashan lakes to Rizhao's Hailong Bay and Tai'an's Dongping Lake, these "water aristocrats" have become regular sights. Early spring is the best time to observe them, as they enter breeding season with full plumage and engage in graceful courtship rituals.
Designated as a nationally protected species, the increasing urban presence of grebes reflects Shandong's improving environmental quality and offers city dwellers a daily dose of wild beauty just at their doorsteps.
