A new 500-kilovolt substation in Weihai's Rushan began operations on Feb 7, marking the first facility of its kind built and activated in Shandong province during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026–30).

Constructed by State Grid Shandong Electric Power Company starting in November 2024, the Rushan substation was completed two months ahead of schedule. It is strategically located to integrate and transmit a diverse mix of clean energy, including nuclear power, photovoltaic, wind, and stored energy from the Yantai-Weihai region, serving as a major clean energy hub in the province.

"The substation's operation is a crucial step in building a new-type power system and advancing Shandong's green energy transition," said Wang Chunyi, deputy director of the company's development and planning department. It can improve grid stability and power supply reliability on the Jiaodong Peninsula while supporting the efficient delivery and consumption of new energy.

The project used advanced prefabricated components and eco-friendly construction methods. Improved coordination between equipment suppliers and builders streamlined the construction process, significantly boosting overall efficiency. This project offers a replicable model for cross-regional clean energy integration nationwide.
