Kong Shujun, a doctor from Yantai Yuhuangding Hospital, is part of a medical team providing essential support to the Nyalam County Central Hospital in the Xizang autonomous region. Her efforts are part of a broader initiative to enhance healthcare services in the region.
Inspired by her mentor and senior colleagues who have previously served in Xizang, Kong embraced this challenging role on Mar 10, 2025. Her appointment as the deputy director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Nyalam County Central Hospital marks a significant step in her career.
Kong has introduced new medical technologies to improve diagnostic capabilities, significantly reducing the need for Tibetan women to travel 12 hours to Lhasa for examinations. In the four months since her arrival, Kong and her team have performed five emergency cesarean sections, saving the lives of five newborns.
As the leader of the medical team, Kong is also responsible for providing healthcare services to personnel involved in national projects in Nyalam county.
"We're also focusing on training and mentoring local staff while we're here," Kong explains. "When my senior colleague first served in Xizang, there were no local doctors to assist in surgeries. Now, I can perform cesarean sections with the help of local doctors. These advancements are the result of successive generations of doctors contributing to this mission."
Despite the challenges of working in the high-altitude environment, Kong and her colleagues remain committed to their mission. For them, the dedication to preserving life is the most rewarding aspect of their profession.
