Qingdao freight link extends to Central Asia via Xinjiang

(chinadaily.com.cn) | 2026-09-08

A new rail freight service linking Shandong and Xinjiang has further strengthened Qingdao's overland logistics connections with Central Asia.

The service recently departed Urumqi carrying 106 twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, of home appliances made in Shandong. The cargo was first consolidated in Qingdao and transported to Urumqi before being transferred to an onward train bound for Kazakhstan.

The relay service connects different rail routes through designated logistics hubs, where cargo can be consolidated, transferred and cleared by customs before continuing to its destination. The model helps streamline transport and improve coordination between freight hubs.

Qingdao has in recent years stepped up logistics cooperation with Xinjiang, developing a transport corridor linking Northeast Asia with Central and West Asia. Existing services include freight trains between the China-SCO Local Economic and Trade Cooperation Demonstration Area in Qingdao and Urumqi, as well as rail-road intermodal services to Kashgar.

The Shandong Hi-Speed Xinjiang International Logistics Industrial Park, which began operations in September 2024, serves as an important hub in Qingdao's westbound logistics network. A customs-supervised facility in the park has also begun operating, offering one-stop clearance services for multiple forms of cross-border e-commerce.

Moving forward, Qingdao will continue to enhance the cargo collection, transfer and customs-clearance capabilities of the Jinan-Qingdao China-Europe Railway Express hub, while using the new service to strengthen trade and supply-chain links between Shandong, Xinjiang and overseas markets
