Qingdao's spring economy blooms with integrated consumption

(chinadaily.com.cn) | 2026-03-24

As spring revitalizes Qingdao's coastal landscapes, the city is leveraging its natural beauty to boost its economy.

This spring, Qingdao has set up 216 key events across six categories, blending cultural tourism, sports, and commerce to turn spring scenery into consumer energy.

Rather than just focusing on flowers, Qingdao enriches the experience with interactive activities, from outdoor concerts at Xiaomai Island to intangible cultural heritage performances and family-friendly camping. Scenic spots like Laoshan Mountain offer free admission for female visitors, increasing foot traffic. Data shows increasing visitor numbers across major parks, with benefits extending to parking facilities, restaurants, and creative shops.

The city's strategy goes beyond tourism. Commercial districts have embraced the spring season with fashion launches, beauty promotions, and dining discounts. A 5-million-yuan ($725,249) retail and dining voucher program in Shinan district directly boosted tens of millions in sales, while auto purchase subsidies added hundreds of millions in retail revenue. Seasonal spring cuisine, from wild vegetables to fresh seafood, has become a highlight at local markets and restaurants.

Sports events like the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race stopover in Qingdao and CBA home games, alongside rural activities like strawberry picking and pastoral flower tours, have further diversified spring consumption offerings.

Through these integrated efforts, Qingdao is not only creating seasonal excitement but also building year-round appeal, steadily progressing toward its goal of becoming a premier international coastal tourism destination.
