Qingdao's winter sports season heats up tourism, fun

(chinadaily.com.cn) | 2026-02-04

As winter arrives, Qingdao's icy landscapes become centers of activity. From skiing on Cangma Mountain's slopes to indoor ice skating at MixC, and from children's snow classes at Jinshan Ski Resort to family-friendly snow play areas at Qingdao International Horticultural Exposition Park — the city's winter offerings are diverse and expanding.

This season, winter activities are generating significant interest, boosting both leisure and local consumption. According to the China Ice and Snow Tourism Development Report (2026), participation across the country is on the rise, and Qingdao is keeping up through professional venues, urban ice rinks, and themed snow parks.

Cangma Mountain Ski Resort, one of the city's largest, has experienced notable growth. Night skiing has become particularly popular since the resort extended its hours and upgraded lighting, attracting both office workers and experienced skiers. Visitors are up about 10 percent year-on-year, with a 30 percent increase in nighttime attendance.

To make winter sports more accessible, many venues have introduced more affordable pricing and packages, further fueling the shift from a seasonal activity to a year-round tourism driver.

Industry analysts note that Qingdao's "ice and snow+" approach — combining  sports, leisure, and holiday experiences — is extending visitor stays and improving the city's winter appeal.
