Qingdao emerges as top destination for intl tourists
Qingdao is becoming a popular destination for international travelers, with 441,900 inbound visitors in the first nine months of this year, a 43.5 percent year-on-year increase.
Data from the China Immigration Inspection of Qingdao airport shows that 408,000 foreign nationals entered through the port during this period, a 50.9 percent rise from the previous year.
The growth is largely driven by China's expanded visa-free policies, covering 75 countries and 55 transit-free nations. Nearly 310,000 foreign visitors entered Qingdao under these policies, accounting for 76 percent of total foreign arrivals. South Korea and Japan were the top sources, with 290,000 and 31,000 travelers, respectively.
During this year's National Day and Mid-Autumn holiday, Qingdao solidified its status as a premier coastal destination, ranking among the nation's top 10 long-haul travel spots. It was the only city in Shandong province to achieve this distinction.
According to Ctrip's holiday report, overseas visitor orders to Qingdao increased by 100 percent year-on-year, with South Korea, Japan, Malaysia, the United States, and Russia being the top five source markets.
Enhanced air connectivity, especially with South Korea, where Seoul-Qingdao routes rank among the busiest, and new cruise itineraries bringing European and American tourists, have further boosted inbound tourism.
Additionally, Qingdao is improving the visitor experience through payment convenience, with over 5,300 merchants now accepting foreign bank cards and multiple zones optimized for international travelers.
Through cultural festivals, upgraded services, and diverse travel experiences, Qingdao is transforming from a transit stop into a must-visit global destination.
