For Qixi Festival, also called Chinese Valentine's Day, people in Chengyang district, Qingdao, are bringing back the tradition of making qiaoguo, a festive pastry tied to local culture.
Using carved wooden molds, these pastries are stamped with patterns symbolizing love, craftsmanship, and blessings for the festival.
Making qiaoguo is closely associated with the Qixi Festival's tradition of qiqiao, where young women prayed for dexterity in needlework and happiness in love. The pastries are not just tasty, but also symbolize prayers for wisdom and a good relationship.
