Qingdao Port expands global reach with new shipping routes

(chinadaily.com.cn) | 2025-08-21

Qingdao Port in Shandong province has significantly strengthened its international shipping network this year. By the end of July, the port added 13 new container routes, four breakbulk shipping lines, and five intermodal rail-sea routes, increasing its foreign trade capacity.

These additions have brought the port's international routes to 233, linking over 700 ports in more than 180 countries and regions. This growth makes Qingdao Port a key maritime hub in global trade and improves its ability to serve international supply chains with more efficiency and coverage.

Since 2024, Qingdao has highlighted the building of an international shipping center as a major city growth plan, continually increasing the capacity of its hub port. The port has hit a cargo throughput of 710 million metric tons and a container throughput of 30.87 million TEUs, ranking fourth and fifth globally. These achievements show Qingdao's progress in becoming an international transport hub.

By 2026, Qingdao aims to make progress as an international shipping center, with cargo throughput over 770 million tons, container throughput over 36 million TEUs, and the number of shipping routes reaching 240. By 2028, the core functions and framework of the international shipping center are expected to take shape, with a goal of becoming a world-class shipping hub by 2035.

This maritime city is now gathering global shipping resources, boosting its hub capabilities, and becoming a strong part of global supply chains — fueling robust momentum for worldwide trade.
