A key milestone in China's drive for technological self-reliance was achieved on June 27 with the inauguration of the SRII Smart Semiconductor Advanced Equipment R&D and Manufacturing Center in the Qingdao Area of the China (Shandong) Pilot Free Trade Zone. Jointly developed by Qingdao City Construction Investment Group and Qingdao Sifang Sirui Intelligent Technology Co Ltd (SRII), the center is expected to significantly strengthen Qingdao's high-end manufacturing and semiconductor capabilities.
With an investment exceeding 1.2 billion yuan ($167.47 million), the facility spans 95 mu (6.33 hectares) and offers 86,000 square meters of state-of-the-art space dedicated to the development and mass production of front-end semiconductor equipment, specifically atomic layer deposition and ion implantation systems. The center's launch addresses a critical gap in the city's semiconductor supply chain and aligns with national efforts to localize key technologies.
"The center was delivered in just one year, showcasing the commitment and efficiency of Qingdao's leading enterprises," said Sui Bin, deputy director of the Qingdao FTZ administrative committee. "It will enhance the integrated circuit ecosystem and set a benchmark for future industrial upgrades."
According to SRII Chairman Nie Xiang, the new center is not only a production hub but also a key node in the company's integrated model of "technology, manufacturing and ecosystem". He added, "We are committed to advancing ALD and IMP innovations, expanding R&D, and creating a globally competitive innovation platform."
SRII, founded with strategic support from CRRC Group, acquired Finland-based Beneq in 2018 and now holds over 480 patents. With business operations spanning 40 countries and more than 500 clients, the company is positioning Qingdao as a rising hub in global semiconductor manufacturing.
