"The delicious food and thoughtful service make me feel satisfied and happy," said Guo Yurong, a 72-year-old woman who is living on a subsistence allowance in the community. Since the establishment of the restaurant, Guo has been dining at the restaurant every day.

The "one-yuan" restaurant in the community was initiated by the Jinhu community Party committee to improve elderly care. People above 70 years old can enjoy a sumptuous lunch complete with meat and vegetables at the restaurant.

The food preparation process of the community canteen is strictly monitored to ensure good food quality and safety. All dishes prepared are suitable for the elderly as they have low sugar, oil and salt content, said Wang Yongjian, the manager of the restaurant.

The establishment of the "one-yuan" restaurant is part of Guangrao county's efforts to improve people's lives. During the first eleven months of last year, the county spent 3.63 billion yuan on people's livelihood improvement.

As of the end of last year, 105 "one-yuan" restaurants serving more than 7,000 elderly people in the county had been established.

These restaurants also regularly organize activities involving cultural promotion, song performances and health care knowledge lectures to enrich the lives of the elderly and help them fend off loneliness.

Taking positive and effective measures to improve the care of seniors matters a great deal to the construction of a modern socialist nation, local officials said.
