East China's Shandong province is undertaking an ambitious plan to expand its high-speed rail network to cover over 93 percent of its counties by 2035, according to the Shandong Provincial People's Government.

According to the province's transportation development plan, its high-speed rail operating mileage will reach 5,700 kilometers by 2035.

Intercity travel will also be more convenient with half-hour, one-hour, and two-hour road systems traveling between local cities.

Local authorities said that this year, Shandong will invest 231.7 billion yuan ($34.36 billion) into the construction of transportation infrastructure.

The province currently has six high-speed rail projects under construction, and the Weifang-Laixi high-speed railway is expected to be completed and open to traffic within the year.
