Qingdao's green transition enhances ecological, economic vitality

(chinadaily.com.cn) | 2025-10-22

Qingdao has been vigorously advancing a comprehensive green transition since the start of the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), integrating ecological priorities and green development into its high-quality growth strategy.

By transforming its industrial structure, energy mix, transportation systems, and urban-rural development, the city is systematically reducing carbon emissions, curbing pollution, expanding green spaces, and sustaining economic growth.

A key initiative has been the citywide promotion of a "zero-waste city" model. Qingdao took the lead in Shandong province by formulating standards for 16 types of "zero-waste cells" and has established nearly 1,000 such units. It has also fostered a thriving recycling industry for used power batteries, home appliances, and tires, strengthening the ecological foundation of a beautiful Qingdao.

These efforts are creating an eco-friendly pattern where the city, mountains, and sea coexist in harmony.

Over the past five years, Qingdao's air quality has consistently ranked among the best in the province, with major pollutants meeting national standards and good air quality rates rising. Water quality in key sections and coastal areas has improved significantly, and all key construction land remains safe for use.

The city has excelled in pollution prevention assessments for the past five years and remains in the top 10 in national eco-friendly business environment rankings. Furthermore, Qingdao has hosted influential international forums such as the Green Development Forum of Shanghai Cooperation Organization Countries, showcasing its dynamic balance of ecological appeal and sustainable development.
